Land, Memory, and Medicine: Restoring Community Through Plants
A Talk by Rockie Gilford (Community Herbalist · Artist · Founder, Mawe Apothecary)
About this Talk
Plants are borderless allies. They cross cracks in the sidewalk and carry seeds braided into the hair of ancestors. In this session, Rockie Gilford—artist, herbalist, and Texas Folklorist Fellow—weaves story, memory, and plant medicine into a vision of community resilience.
Drawing from oral history projects and hands-on land stewardship, she shows how community gardens act like a collective nervous system—regulating stress, restoring balance, and fostering joy. Rockie highlights herbs of memory and resilience, including Rose, Hawthorn, Tulsi, Oatstraw, Okra, Hibiscus, Amaranth, and Watermelon.
